INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MASS COMMUNICATION NORTH EAST REGIONAL CAMPUS
At a glance
When the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), North Eastern Regional Campus, began functioning from the Mizoram University (MZU) Campus on the 8th of August, 2011, a new chapter had begun. It was a big step forward for higher education in the state, and also the growth of the illustrious IIMC brand. Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram was chosen as a location for the centre as it is the capital of a state which has seen uninterrupted peace and growth over the last three decades. Mizoram, thus, has been an oasis of tranquility in the the north-east region. Also, there has been a huge spurt in the growth of the media, both print and television, over the last few years in the region. This has led to a demand for skilled manpower, which the institute intends to provide.
To meet this growing need, anMoU was signed between the IIMC and MZU through which eight acres of land was acquired by IIMC. Besides allotment of land on the campus, a transit building is made available for IIMC to function since its inception. Being located on the Mizoram University Campus, students have the advantage of experiencing culturally enriching campus life and the IIMC North East Campus has been maintaining cordial and supportive relation with MZU from the start.
IIMC North Eastern Campus is presently offering PG Diploma Course in English Journalism. Since its inception in 2011, the institute is headed by Shri. LR Sailo, Regional Director, who has decades of experience in the field of public relations and also served as the Director, Information and Public Relation, Govt of Mizoram, for over twenty years. The NER Campus has one Assistant Professor, Dr. C. Lalmuansangkimi who has been with the Institute right from the beginning; Miss Amy Felicia Danielle, an Academic Associate cum Teaching Assistant and three Administrative cum Academic staff. With the hard works rendered by the Regional Director, faculty and staff and the ceaseless support from the parent Institute at Delhi, IIMC-NERC has managed to perform on par with other campuses of IIMC in different aspects of the Academia. It has a fully equipped lab for print journalism, with the required softwares and also has video editing desk. The library is well-stocked with books in all the fields related to communication studies to which the students can have easy access. Since the first session, students from different parts of India came to the campus which is heartening, as the institute is trying its utmost to position itself as a premier institute for media education in the north-east all the while celebrating the diversity of India.
Further, the construction of the permanent campus which began in 2015 with all facilities including hostels and faculty housing is completed and has been taken over from CPWD in the month of March, 2022.
Right from the beginning, the institute has a good placement track record with alumni working in DDK Aizawl, DDK Delhi, Press Trust of India (PTI), Red FM, New Indian Express, All India Radio, India today, Reuters, ANI and other reputed media organizations. Year after year, students have been able to secure placement through on-campus as well as off-campus recruitments and they are establishing their own niche in reputed media organizations. The success of the students is a testimony to the strength of the PG Diploma in English Journalism course which the institute offers at present. The course aims to equip young people with the skill to survive in the dynamic world of print, television and new media journalism.
The original mandate of the IIMC was to be 'A Centre for Advanced Study in Mass Communication with responsibilities for consultation, training, and research and development, particularly in the use of mass communication in support of national economic and social development.' The setting up of the North Eastern Regional Campus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication is a step forward towards achieving that ideal.
